HCT After Dark 2017: ‘Heathers: The Musical’
Performance Dates: July 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29
After a successful run of our first ever ‘HCT After Dark’ production of ‘Evil Dead: The Musical’, ‘HCT After Dark’ returns for a second year! This summer we will be producing “Heathers the Musical”.
Heathers The Musical is the darkly delicious story of Veronica Sawyer, a brainy, beautiful teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High: the Heathers. But before she can get comfortable atop the high school food chain, Veronica falls in love with the dangerously sexy new kid J.D. When Heather Chandler, the Almighty, kicks her out of the group, Veronica decides to bite the bullet and bow down before her…but J.D. has another plan for that bullet.
Directed by Ruth and Erik Nielsen
HCT After Dark 2016: ‘Evil Dead the Musical’
This summer the Hastings Community Theatre will launch its new HCT After Dark program with “Evil Dead the Musical”.
From evildeadthemusical.com: “For those who don’t know, this hilarious live stage show takes all the elements of the cult classic horror films, Evil Dead 1, Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness then combines them to make one of the craziest theatrical experiences of all time.
Five college students go to an abandoned cabin in the woods, and accidentally unleash an evil force that turns them all into demons. It’s all up to Ash (a housewares employee, turned demon-killing hero), and his trusty chainsaw to save the day. Blood flies. Limbs are dismembered. Demons are telling bad jokes… and all to music.”
We at Hastings Community Theatre felt that, while our seasonal offerings appeal to a more traditional audience and our summer musicals feature middle school and high school children, we weren’t drawing in adults college age and up. Our hope is that HCT After Dark will fill this need.
Evil Dead the Musical is slowly becoming a cult favorite, much like Rocky Horror. Some cities offer producitons on an annual basis, drawing a large following of ‘Deadites’. When we began working on this musical, we had some questions regarding the change in publishers and contacted the official website, evildeadthemusical.com. To our surprise, the person who helped us with our questions was Frank Cipollo, one of the composers who wrote the musical. Frank was extremely helpful, and even offered us the opportunity to use the tracks used by the touring company of Evil Dead for our music. The result is a fantastic sound and a great production.
Evil Dead the Musical opens on Thursday, August 25 and runs through Sunday, August 28. Doors open at 6:30pm and the show begins at 7:30pm. Tickets are $15 for general seating, or $18 for the splatter zone. There is a $3 discount with a college ID. The Hastings Community Theatre is located at the east end of Good Samaritan Village.
